Wall St Week Ahead: The market is oversold, but major signs say "sell"
The U.S. flag hangs outside the New York Stock ExchangeNEW YORK (Reuters) - Normally a big decline would set up Wall Street for a technical rebound. The Weapon of Mass Destruction
Former Delaware Senator Ted Kaufman's op/ed warning regarding the disturbingly ignored evolution of our financial markets. Electronic trading, glitches, "dark pools", HFT (high frequency trading) and a lack of transaparency that has everyone in-the-know very concerned. But no one is doing anything to stop it.
"Animals"
Chris Jones' riveting account of the terrifying, chaotic situation that unfolded when a mentally unstable owner of a large collection of exotic animals in Zanesville, Ohio let those animals loose. The public safety crisis that ensued was unprecedented, forcing local law enforcement to make rapid decisions with zero formal guidance. Scarier still - the author finds that ownership of these animals (bears, tigers, lions) is much more common than one would think, and is largely unregulated in most U.S. states. An un-put-downable cautionary tale.
"A Death in Yellowstone"
Jessica Grose's fascinating look at the science and politics of how grizzly bears are managed in the American west - specifically in Yellowstone National Park. In the wake of two fatal human maulings, a network of bear experts methodically track the animal that perpetrated the attacks. Reads like an episode of CSI, and provides insight and education while also dispelling some myths about these majestic, endangered animals.
"Afghanistan\'s Wounded Struggle With Genital Injuries"
This is painful to read, but necessary. Among the myriad devastations wrought by the war in Afghanistan, one that is rarely spoken of is the catastrophic impact IED explosions - a Taliban weapon of choice - can have on soldiers' genitalia. A personal profile of two U.S. soldiers - astonishingly brave in their candor on this subject - and their trials both physical and emotional since losing sexual function. Also a candid and depressing profile of medicine trying to catch up with current events, and the Defense Department's typically underwhelming and unhelpful, sometimes punitive policies that deal with this new, and growing, segment of wounded veterans.
"The City of Broken Men"
Fascinating. Devin Friedman takes an in-depth look at the military's Landstuhl Medical Center in Germany. When grievously wounded, if they survive on-site triage every serviceperson from Iraq or Afghanistan passes through this hospital for stabilizing, more extensive, complicated surgeries, and eventual transfer back to medical facilities in the U.S. for ongoing treatment. It is the most sophisticated, high volume trauma center in the world - the staff manages a mass casualty exercise every single day. It is the first, and only, operation of its kind. Hopefully it will be the last.
"In The City Of Cement"
The 2010 Pulitzer Prize Winner for International Reporting. The late Anthony Shadid's artful, nostalgic, by turns melancholy and quietly hopeful rumination on Bagdhad, a city in ruins in the wake of the American invasion and occupation. It is, sadly, so much easier to destroy than to build.
"The Big Business of Breast Cancer"
Don?t miss Lea Goldman?s piece in Marie Claire on the out-of-control commercialism of ?pink? branded products and the proliferation of scammers in the world of breast cancer charity. Very few organizations are actually passing along a significant portion - or, often, any - of your donated money to research and survivor aid. If you want to donate to the breast cancer cause, do a little research first to find worthy recipients whose primary goal is not lining their own pockets. Think before you pink.
"Tiny Little Laws"
Kathy Dobie's searing piece in Harper?s on the rampant sexual abuse and violence that occurs on Indian reservations, and how there is never justice ? and, often, even no medical care for victims. The hopeless cycle of abject poverty and despair, crony corruption, and antiquated, Byzantine laws ? tribal laws intertwined with U.S. Federal law ? make for a culture of systemic sexual assault that goes universally unpunished. Jarring and sickening. A national disgrace of the highest order.
